As we are approaching the end of the first decade of the new millenium, most business owners understand that having a web site is just as necessary for success as having a phone number.

However internet use and web interactions have gone beyond simply posting a few tidbits about your company on the web, now in order to be competitive you need to actively engage your site visitor and encourage interactions.

One effective way of doing this with multiple benefits is by incorporating a blog for you business on your web site.

Benefit #1: Defining the Argument

I sold real estate for almost 10 years before I started my business focusing solely on small business marketing. One key point that my real estate trainers stressed over and again was the importance of defining the criteria for selection in your presentation.

When in a client presentation, I would identify the key criteria a seller or buyer should be looking for in a Realtor and then demonstrated why I was the best person to meet that criteria.

This principle applies to any business. Most of your clients are not experts in your field, you need to explain to them why you are.

A business blog can be a vital tool in accomplishing this.

Many people get stressed out about writing and don't do it because they don't think they are good enough. Blogging isn't about winning a Pulitzer, it is about creating a "voice" for your business. You want prospective customers and clients to get a feel for who you are and what your business does. You want them to feel like they "know" you, and that they will call you first when they are looking for your service.

A blog allows you to continually reinforce the important criteria in your industry and your competence regarding that criteria. When issues or hot topics break, it provides a format to weigh in and establish your authority in the field.
That is so true. Static websites are nice, but as you pointed out, engaging the visitor improves the chance of them returning. I just got finished converting a CPA's static website to a Blog. He was tired of waiting for his web designer to make a few simple changes and add another page. Having a blog site has given him the ability to manage his site on his own.
OK, I'm sold. here is the million dollar question. How do I do this?
Anthony, Your question has a few dependencies: 1) What markets are you trying to reach? 2) What message and or brand are you trying to communicate. 3) Whether you are a confident do-it-yourselfer. The technical aspects of setting up a WordPress or Blogger blog is a bit more complicated than a Twitter account or a facebook page but can be accomplished without a lot of professional support. Tell us more about your goals and internet competencies and perhaps we can suggest some direction for you to pursue.
What is it with web designers having a hangup by changing simple words. I am one and I don't get.
