Why Pre Plan Your Funeral or Cremation?

I find it funny when I attend network opportunities, the reaction of people's faces when I tell them I am in the funeral business. I just listened about their company, what they do, etc. and then I know it's about to happen....they ask me .."So what do you do?" - - I already know it's coming... "I work in the funeral business"...boy did I just drop a BOMB. Their eyes widen and they somehow quickly walk away. Fear I guess......

You are already a pre planner. You plan for things that… Continue

Termite Swarmers

I just wanted to give everyone an early heads up. After all this rain Houston just had and now that we are getting a few days of warm weather, it is possible people may start seeing termite swarmers flying around.. It's a little early, but as it warms up swarmers do not realize it's only January and may try to escape.

The purpose of termite swarmers, in a nutshell, are to fly out of the ground into another part of the ground and mate with other swarmers. This forms the new… Continue

Being Lean Is Not Enough

Successful application of lean can help virtually any company reduce costs while improving quality. Unfortunately, it is being sold as the cure-all for all of the problems in business. There is much more to running a business than an effective lean strategy.

Houston Industrial Market Report 4Q 2009

Houston Industrial Market Demand Weak in 2009

Houston's industrial market closed 2009 with both gains and losses, that in the end were overwritten by an overall decrease in market activity due to weak tenant demand. Positive net absorption of 1.7 million SF citywide attested to the market's resilience against the worst economic recession in recent history, even though it fell significantly below the 9.4 million SF of gains recorded in 2008. Occupancy levels above 90% for all… Continue

The Dreaded Annual Operating Expense Statement

This is the time of year that most office tenants begin to receive the building’s operating expense escalation statement for the previous year of their lease term. This is the additional rent charged to the tenant to cover the incease in operating expenses for the building. Even if the operating expense escalation has been carefully negotiated in the lease document, tenants are often surprised at the amount when the bill arrives.

Additional Rent-Operating Expense… Continue

Houston Office Market Report 4Q 2009

Houston Office Market Vacancy Up, Rents Down in 2009

Houston’s office market posted weak fundamentals at the end of 2009 with year-over-year higher vacancy, lower rental rates, and negative net absorption ending the previous five consecutive years of gains in occupied space citywide. Against the ongoing uncertainty regarding the timing for recovery from the worst economic recession in recent history, office tenants continued to… Continue

Houston: 2009 Top Office Leases

Houston, in 2009 began to feel the effect of “The Great Recession” and it was not a banner year in terms of blockbuster office leases. The Houston market posted seven office leases over 100,000 SF in 2009, as few large credit-strong tenants capitalized on prevailing weak market conditions.

I suspect as office market fundamentals remain weak for at least the first half of 2010 and likely until 2011, that as savvy large tenants become… Continue

Should You Own Your Office Space?

Would it be beneficial to our business to purchase an office building rather than continue leasing?

This is a question that I often hear at some point when working with my clients. Furthermore, it seems this question arises more often when there has been a significant swing in the market, either the leasing market is perceived as expensive with healthy rental rates and occupancy costs or the market has taken a downturn and the opportunity to purchase real estate at a perceived value… Continue

Capture Every Contact!

As a business development coach, I’m finding more and more businesses who do not take the time to capture every single person they contact or who contacts them. This happens on their website and with their person to person contacts in their market. This one simple marketing gem can transform into a huge marketing asset for your business.

If you spend time, energy and money to acquire a prospect or lead you must capture it. If a person comes to you or listens past the first three… Continue

Today is my birthday!`

Today is my birthday. January 13, 1962 is the year that my mother was granted her wish, to have a baby girl.

I can say that I've lived a full life but not a miraculously successful one. I still find the dependence of others a problem I'm trying to resolve. I do have businesses in IT consulting, writing assignments and articles, and now I've even partnered up with my daughter to knit and crochet hats, scarves, baby items, and afghans. This is a fun adventure I've put myself… Continue
