Bert Martinez Communications, a "Houston-based sales training" and marketing development firm, is hiring 50 salespeople to help build its new division for search-engine marketing (SEM).
"Search-engine marketing is here to stay," said Bert Martinez, president and founder of the company, which also has offices in Phoenix. "We need about 50 salespeople who can sell our consulting services to clients."
The company's clients are mostly small businesses: doctors offices and law firms, for example, that want to use search engines to grow their own clientele. According to Martinez, who used to be an ad salesman before he founded the company, his clients need direction on SEM strategy.
"They need to harness the power of the internet, use more technology," he said. "They need to get out of the Yellow Pages mindset." At least that's the theory behind the firm's expansion.
Martinez wants salespeople who come from varied backgrounds and experience levels. He wants former sales managers, vice presidents of sales units as well as newbies who have a passion for public speaking and are hungry for sales. "The most important thing is that they have enough skill to talk to multiple levels of clientele, from mom and pop stores to C-level executives," he said.
Most of the work is team-based.
"One person doesn't do everything, everyone does a little bit," said Martinez. "That means different experience levels are welcome and it also keeps our proprietary information secret."
Compensation for these positions is heavy on commissions and bonus rather than salary, said Martinez. The company also offers employee stock ownership, though there are no plans to take the company public just yet. "We want to offer ownership and incentive to motivate employees," he said.
